    ^Being taught

*CE - 645 Geotechnical Centrifuge Modelling/*CE-419 Physical Modelling in Geotechnics

Physical modelling is concerned with replicating a process or a phenomenon in a reduced scale version of the prototype.  A wide range of geotechnical problems can be investigated using physical modelling techniques.  In the recent past, Centrifuge modelling has become one of the powerful tools for physical modelling in geotechnical engineering. Many universities/research centers all over the world are very active and using centrifuge modelling technique for understanding problems encountered in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering.

Geotechnical Centrifuge Modelling is a course designed and developed by the applicant in the department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay. The course was first offered in the autumn semester of 1999-2000 and has since been offered continuously. The course is the first of its kind in the country and is designed to prepare the students in the advanced technique of physical modelling using geotechnical centrifuges. The course is being offered with three lectures and two hours of laboratory per every three weeks. Laboratory component include modelling of the following: a) Stability and Deformation behaviour of cohesive soil slope, b) Stability of vertical cut, c) Deformation behaviour of trench, d) Consolidation of soft clay, e) Stability of circular opening, and f) Permeability of fine-grained soil in a small centrifuge. The aforementioned laboratory tests are framed to create better understanding of principles of soil mechanics/geotechnical engineering to students. The basic aim of the course is to make the students aware of advanced technologies in modelling techniques in geotechnical engineering with an emphasis on centrifuge modelling and also to develop CAL (Centrifuge Aided Learning) in geotechnical engineering education.

Indo-French Joint project was completed in the year 2012 successfully. This project was collaborated with LTHE, University of Joseph Fourier 1, Grenoble, France and it is on “Risk of Cracking of clay liners for landfill capping and environmental hazard”, Some of the major achievements of the project are:

    ·         Installation of flexible wall permeameter equipment at IIT Bombay

    ·         Execution of centrifuge model tests on soil barriers reinforced with different types of fibers

    ·         Study on the effect of geomembrane layer on the integrity of clay-based landfill covers

    ·         Initiation for development of an equipment for studying the influence of flexure on the gas permeability of soil beams and is being performed by the post-doc recruited for this project.
