Project 3 - Mira Mitra

    Objectives :

  • Development of computational schemes for simulation of wave propagation and their interaction with damages in orthotropic tubular structures. This will mainly involve the following:
  • Dispersion characteristics of wave propagation in isotropic tubular structures
  • Dispersion characteristics of wave propagation in orthotropic tubular structures
  • Simulation of wave propagation in damaged and undamaged isotropic tubular structure
  • Simulation of wave propagation in damaged and undamaged orthotropic tubular structure
  • Analysis of interaction of wave with different types of damages
  • Sensitivity study for defect size and orientation
  • Development of damage index for prediction of damage.
  • Validation with parallel experimental study using both piezoelectric wedge and wafer transducers
  • Tuning of parameters like excitation frequency, transducer properties, placement of transducers
  • Exploring suitability for structures with higher complexities e.g. fluid filled tubular structures, presence of structural discontinuities.

    Deliverables :

    Ist Year:

  • Derivation of dispersion characteristics for wave propagation in isotropic and orthotropic tubular structures. Simulation of wave propagation in such structures. Modelling of damages and study of interaction of damages with propagating wave.
  • IInd Year:

  • Experimental implementation and validation of the computational results. Tuning of parameters like input frequency, transducer properties and positions. Development of damage index for predicting the position and extent of damage

    IIIrd Year:

  • Exploring the suitability and implementation for structures with higher complexities such as presence of fluid and structural discontinuities.
