Dr. Sowmya completed B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Biotechnology from St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, Karnataka, India. She later joined Yenepoya University in Mangalore as Junior Research Fellow during which she was associated with BRNS, DAE funded project related to toxicity of uranium compounds in rats. With an interest in microbial biotechnology, she worked on phosphate solubilizing bacteria for biomineralization of uranium and received her doctorate on the topic “A study on isolation, characterization and prospecting of bacteria for uranium remediationâ€. Her area of interests include environmental microbiology and biotechnology particularly bioremediation of heavy metals and nuclear waste, bio-fertilizers, bio-geo interface, bio-enhancement of geo-materials for sustainable applications.
