LABORATORY INVESTIGATION ON ESTIMATION OF SOIL ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY

The knowledge of soil electrical resistivity can be applied for predicting various soil parameters, phenomenon and mechanisms occurring in soils, such as for obtaining the soil-water content, degree of compaction, saturation, soil salinity, estimating liquefaction potential of the soil, detecting and locating geomembrane failures etc. An effort has been made in this dissertation to investigate soil electrical resistivity and to establish effect of state and type of the soil on it. For achieving this, two experimental setups, an electrical resistivity box and an electrical resistivity probe, have been fabricated. Based on the results obtained, efforts have been made to generate a generalized relationship for estimation of the soil electrical resistivity. An attempt has also been made to correlate soil electrical resistivity with its thermal resistivity.
