EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL STUDIES ON LOAD-DEFLECTION CHARACTERISTICS OF PVC PIPES

PVC pipes are flexible pipes and are being employed for various purposes like sewerage, water mains etc., these days. However, for these applications it is important to study their load-deformation characteristics. In order to achieve the same PVC pipes (of different diameters and pressure ratings) have been tested in the laboratory, with the help of parallel plate loading arrangement, followed by their burial in different types of backfills. Marston?s and Prism load theories have been employed to compute the pipe deflections. It has been noticed that Martson?s theory predicts pipe deflections which are quite close to the ones recorded under burial condition(s) of the pipe(s). FEM code ANSYS has also been used to predict the pipe deformations. The obtained results match very well with the experimental observations.
