LOWER BOUND BEARING CAPACITY OF STRIP FOOTINGS LOCATED ABOVE UNDERGROUND OPENINGS

Lower bound bearing capacity factors for footings placed on slopes have been obtained using modified Lysmer-Basudhar approach. Slopes with angle of inclination 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 have been considered for footing placed at the edge of the slope and at a distance of 0.4, 0.8, 1.0 and 2.0 times its width. The effect of footing base roughness has also been examined. Obtained results are found to be in good agreement with those available in literature. The study also brings out the efficiency of non-linear programming (NLP) over linear programming (LP) technique as adopted by some researchers for footings placed on slopes and cuts.
