Centrifuge Modelling of Fly ash Leaching

Both utilisation, as an alternative construction material, and safe disposal of fly ash involve important geo-environmental considerations. Infiltration of water through the ash ponds could leach out these highly toxic metals and contaminate the subsurface and ground water resources.Leaching studies can contribute greatly to overall waste management strategy to be adopted by simulating contaminant release and its environmental impact by accurate characterisation of leachable contaminants. A procedure has been adopted, in the present study, for complete characterisation of the fly ash and evaluation of its leaching behaviour in the landfill environment. Leaching tests have been carried out to ascertain the possibility of migration of trace elements into water and to get an estimate of the maximum concentration of each element actually available for leaching.
