Centrifuge Modelling of of Sand Boiling Phenomenon

Sand boiling is mainly earthquake induced or due to sudden rise in the pore water pressures. The studies on this phenomena are mostly confined to the shear strength characteristics and earthquake liquefaction. The basic concept of sand boiling induced by excessive hydraulic gradient and increase in pore water pressures has been discussed in the present work. An effort has been made to understand the basic phenomena of sand boiling by conducting 1-g laboratory and centrifuge tests and the validity of the modeling of models has been established.
