Investigations on Establishing Diffusion Characteristics of Intact Rock Mass

The selection of an appropriate intact rack mass for safe disposal of radioactive waste, mainly below ground level at greater depths, with a safe period of approximately 300 years require essentially for a specific radionuclide to deteriorate its concentration level which then becomes non-hazardous to geo-environment, is challenging task. Diffusion, transport and an important retardation mechanism for radionuclide's, occurs mainly due to concentration gradient in the rock mass, characteristic is to be established. The present study deals with the determination of diffusion coefficient of Sr2+ through intact rock mass. To achieve this, accelerated diffusion tests were conducted on intact rock samples by applying DC electric potential across the sample. Also the study demonstrates the determination of diffusion coefficient of contaminant from its electrical conductivity response. Efforts were also made to develop relationship between charge and contaminant concentration, passing through the sample.
