About Us

Who We Are

The Transportation Systems Engineering (TSE) group at IIT Bombay is a premier research and academic center dedicated to advancing knowledge and developing innovative solutions for transportation challenges since 1988.

Our Research

Our research spans traffic engineering, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), transportation planning, public transit systems, road safety, sustainable mobility, and connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV).

Our Team

The group comprises 10 distinguished faculty members and over 50 graduate students actively engaged in cutting-edge research across diverse transportation domains.

TPMDC Conference

We pioneered the Transportation Planning and Management Development Conference (TPMDC) in 1996, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from around the world.

Collaborations

We collaborate extensively with government agencies, industry partners, and international institutions to address real-world transportation problems and implement practical solutions.

Our Journey

From inception to becoming a leading transportation research center

1958 - IIT Bombay Established

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay was established as the second IIT in India, with support from UNESCO and funding from the Soviet Union. The Department of Civil Engineering has been part of IIT Bombay since its inception.

1988 - TSE Group Formation

The Transportation Systems Engineering (TSE) group was officially established within the Department of Civil Engineering, marking the beginning of specialized transportation research at IIT Bombay.

1996 - TPMDC Launch

The Transportation Planning and Management Development Conference (TPMDC) was initiated, establishing a biennial tradition of bringing together transportation experts from around the world.

2018 - Institution of Eminence

IIT Bombay was designated as an Institution of Eminence, recognizing its outstanding contribution to research and education, including transportation systems engineering.

2025 - Present Day

Today, TSE group comprises 10+ faculty members and 50+ graduate students, establishing itself as one of India's premier transportation research centers.
