Dr. Chandra R. Bhat is the Director of the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) and the Adnan Abou-Ayyash Centennial Professor in Transportation Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches courses in transportation systems analysis and transportation planning. Substantively, Bhat has contributed to the area of transportation and urban policy design, with far reaching implications for public health, energy dependence, greenhouse gas emissions, and societal quality of life. Methodologically, he has been a pioneer in the formulation and use of statistical, econometric, and mathematical modeling methods.

Bhat has received many research honors during the course of his career. He is listed among the top ten most cited Civil Engineering Researchers by Google Scholar. Two of his papers were included in a recent book compilation of the 46 most influential and innovative scholarly papers in the choice modeling field in the past 60 years. Earlier this year, Chandra received the 2013 Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in recognition of his pioneering contributions to the complex multi-dimensional dependency modeling and econometric analysis fields, and the 2013 Pyke Johnson Award from the Transportation Research Board for the best paper in the area of Transportation Planning and Environment. During his career, Bhat has received the 2004 Walter L. Huber Award and the 2005 James Laurie Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the 2008 Wilbur Smith National Distinguished Award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), the prestigious 2008 Jefferson Science Fellowship (JSF) coordinated by the US Department of State, and the 2009 Steinberg Award from the American Road Transportation Builder’s Association (ARTBA). In addition, he has received several accolades for his teaching and mentoring, including the 2006 Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company Award for Excellence in Engineering Teaching, the 2007 Outstanding Graduate Teacher Award from the UT Graduate School, the 2008 Texas ITE student chapter Outstanding Faculty Advisor of the year, and the 2010 induction into UT Austin’s Academy of Distinguished Teaching. Bhat’s pedagogical efforts are also evident in the over 35 external (non-UT) awards received since 2000 by his graduate students for their scholarly research and leadership contributions.

Bhat has played a leadership role in the transportation profession, and has chaired many national and international committees and organizations. He has been invited many times as a guest by public media outlets to provide timely perspectives on contemporary transportation issues.

Shashi Nambisan is a Professor of Civil Engineering at University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT). He received his Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from IIT Madras, Master degree in Civil Engineering (Transportation) from Virginia Tech, and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Transportation) from the University of California Berkeley. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Nevada.

Professor Nambisan was previously a professor of Civil Engineering and the Director the Institute for Transportation at Iowa State University. He also served on the faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) for about 17 years including roles as a Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Transportation Research Center.

Professor Nambisan has led efforts on more than 155 research and education projects that have addressed local, statewide, regional and national issues in transportation and infrastructure systems management related to policy, planning, operations, safety, and risk analysis. He has authored or co-authored more than 125 peer reviewed journal and conference publications. Along with his students and colleagues, he has made over 230 technical presentations at international, national, and regional conferences and at universities. His efforts have been sponsored by more than a dozen national, state and local government agencies, as well as not-for-profit organizations and the private sector. He also has been a consultant to the World Bank.

Professor Nambisan also has been very active in leadership roles of several professional societies and organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), and Transportation Research Board (TRB). His current roles include those as: President of CUTC; Chair of the Education Committee of ASCE Transportation and Development Institute; Co-Chair of TRB National Data Requirements and Programs Committee, member of the AASHTO Research Advisory Committee-CUTC Liaison Group, and on several national project panels.

For his contributions as an educator, researcher, and leader, Professor Nambisan has received several awards and honors. Among the awards and honors he has received is a proclamation by the Governor of Nevada designating January 31, 2007 as the Professor Shashi Nambisan Day in recognition of his leadership role in and contributions to enhancing transportation safety.

Dr. Jose Holguin-Veras, is the William H. Hart Professor and Director of the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations Center of Excellence for Sustainable Urban Freight Systems, and the Center for Infrastructure, Transportation, and the Environment at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2013 White Houses Transportation Champion of Change Award, the 1996 Milton Pikarsky Memorial Award, and the 2001 National Science Foundations CAREER Award. His research interests are in the areas of freight transportation modeling and economics, and humanitarian logistics. His work has opened the door to new paradigms of freight systems that, not only increase economic efficiency environmental justice. His research has led to major changes in transportation policy and substantial improvements in the ability to improve urban freight systems. His work on humanitarian logistics has played an influential role in disaster response procedures, and has led to deeper insight into how best to respond to large disasters and catastrophic events. He is President of the Scientific Committee of the Pan-American Conferences of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, and member of the Scientific Committee of the World Conference of Transport Research. He is a member of numerous technical committees and editorial boards of leading journals. He received his Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in 1996; a M.Sc. from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1984; and a B.Sc. from the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo en 1982.

Prof. R. "Jay" Jayakrishnan has been in the faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine since 1991, after his BTech from IIT Madras, and Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests are in a variety of topics such as Traffic Flow Theory and Simulation, Transportation Systems Analysis, Network Modelling, Decision Theory, Intelligent Transportation Systems and Public Transit Design. Prof. Jayakrishnan has been a member of several professional committees, has served in the editorial committees of journals such as Transportation Research, and is currently the chair of the Transportation Research Board subcommittee on Route Choice and Spatio-Temporal Processes. He is a recipients of awards such as the Pyke Johnson Best-paper Award from the Transportation Research Board. Seventeen doctoral students have graduated under his advice and he has over 100 refereed publications to his credit.

Dr. Srinivas Peeta is a Professor of Civil Engineering and the Director of the NEXTRANS Center, the USDOT’s Region 5 Regional University Transportation Center. He was the immediate past Chair of the Transportation Network Modeling Committee (ADB30) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies, and was a member of TRB’s Section on Travel Analysis Methods. Dr. Peeta is a board member of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Technical Committee on Transportation Systems. He received his B. Tech., M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras), California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and The University of Texas at Austin, respectively. His research interests are interdisciplinary and broadly span transportation and infrastructure systems. He is on the Editorial Advisory Board of the journals Transportation Research, Part B, Intelligent Transportation Systems Journal, the KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering, and Transportmetrica B: Transport Dynamics. He is the Area Editor for Transport Telematics for the journal Networks and Spatial Economics.

Dr. Peeta has authored over 230 technical publications, and has presented papers/talks/lectures at more than 345 invited and/or international conferences/symposiums in several countries. He is a co-editor of three books: two books published in 2006 in the series Advances in Homeland Security, titled Vol. 1: The Science of Homeland Security, and Vol. 2: Guiding Future Homeland Security Policy - Directions for Scientific Inquiry, and a book published in 2010 titled Sustainable and Resilient Critical Infrastructure Systems: Simulation, Modeling, and Intelligent Engineering. He has received more than US $30 million in sponsored research funding from a diverse set of funding sources such as the USDOT, NSF, FHWA, Indiana DOT, US DOE, NASA, US Department of Education, Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, and Indo-US Science & Technology Forum. Five dissertations supervised by Dr. Peeta received best dissertation awards from organizations such as the Council of University Transportation Centers and the International Association for Travel Behavior Research.

Dr. Peeta has won several awards, including the INFORMS Best Dissertation Award (1994), the NSF CAREER Award (1997), Wansik Excellence in Research Award (2004), the Exceptional Paper Award from TRB’s Traffic Signal Systems Committee (2007), Purdue’s Seed for Success Award (2007-2013), the ASCE Walter Huber Research Award (2009), Visiting Distinguished Scholar, Taiwan (2009), UniSA Distinguished Researcher Award, Australia (2010), Purdue College of Engineering Mentoring Award (2012), and the TRB Blue Ribbon Committee Award (2013) as the chair of the Transportation Network Modeling Committee.

Jack Reilly is a Professor of Practice in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he teaches a number of transportation and engineering courses. Prior to his current position, he was on the staff of the Capital District Transportation Authority in Albany, NY where he was Deputy Executive Director, with responsibility for planning, capital project development and information technology. He has also served as a consultant to the World Bank (transit projects in India (Mysore, Indore) and China) and several US transit systems of varying sizes. He recently completed a manual on transit capacity analysis for cities in developing countries. He is a member of the Transit Research Advisory Committee which advises the Federal Transit Administration on the direction of transit research and has chaired a number of panels for the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies in areas such as bus rapid transit, transit capacity and transit innovation.

Dr. Subhamay Gangopadhyay is presently looking after Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi as its Director. Born in 1955, he graduated in Civil Engineering (B.E.) from University of Calcutta and mastered in Transportation System Engineering (M.Tech) from IIT Kanpur. He also obtained M.Sc. and Ph.D from University of New Brunswick, Canada under Commonwealth Scholarship Plan. He joined CRRI as Scientist `B’ in 1979 and rose to become Director while holding the position of the Head of Traffic Engineering and Transportation Planning Division at CRRI. With over 30 years of experience in the area of Traffic Engineering & Transportation Planning, Regional and Urban Travel Demand Modelling Traffic Flow Theory and Capacity Analysis, Road Traffic Safety, Urban Traffic Congestion and Environment Impact of Road Transport, he has co-ordinated wide range of traffic and transportation studies covering many cities in India such as Mumbai, Surat, Amravati, Nagpur, Aizwal etc. Though being chairman/member of several national committees, some of them are worth mentioning such as a member of Traffic Safety and Management Committee for Government of India; Member of Technical Advisory Group – Sky Bus Metro of Konkan Railway; Member of the Technical Sub-group of Delhi Development Authority and in many other Committee Delhi and Central Government. He is closely associated with several professional organizations such as life member of Institute of Urban Transport (India), Indian Roads Congress (IRC) and Institution of Engineers (India), and has published more than 65 research papers and about 50 technical reports. He also guided a number of Ph.D and M.E. students and has visited Canada, USA, Australia, Italy, Sri Lanka, Germany, South Africa.

Lóránt Tavasszy (1967) is professor in Freight Transport & Logistics at the Delft University of Technology and Principle Scientist at TNO, the Institute for Applied Scientific Research in Delft, The Netherlands. He studied Civil Engineering and obtained his PhD degree at the TU Delft. He took positions as senior researcher, team leader and principal scientist at TNO, specializing in transport modelling, social cost-benefit analysis and policy design. He was responsible for the development of Dutch and European freight models and led a 4-year national research program on this topic. Prof. Tavasszy chairs the Freight Modelling interest group for the World Conference of Transport Research and is international member of the Transportation Research Board committees on Intermodal Transport and Freight Modelling. He won international awards in 1998 (WCTR) and in 2013 (SHRP2 Program) with his work on freight modelling.
